China is becoming the #1 destination for Indian students who want to pursue their medical degree at a swift pace. If you’re wondering what makes Indian students opt for MBBS in China, here’s a piece of information for you- every Chinese medical university which offers admission to international students has their course material prepared in the English language.
But this is not the only reason. Sure, English-medium teaching is probably one of the most important reasons why international, especially Indian students are increasingly choosing China as their career destination, but there are more.
Reasons to Consider MBBS in China
Worldwide Recognition
Chinese government releases a list of eligible medical universities every year which are allowed to offer admission to international students for their medical studies. The medical universities in this list are also listed in the medical school directory of WHO (World Health Organization), which simply means that if you get a medical degree from any of those universities – you’ll be perfectly eligible to appear for medical screening tests in most of the countries in the world like USA, UK, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, etc. After successful completion of the medical degree course, which is 6 years long including 1 year of internship, students get the graduation degree. You may then come back to India and appear on the MCI screening test, and once passed, you can start practising as a medical doctor anywhere in India.
Affordable Medical Education
Affordable medical education at any top Chinese medical university which provides almost identical educational quality as that of top Indian medical colleges is another important reason why Indian students are choosing China for pursuing MBBS. Competition is so fierce that only a handful of students get to admit to a medical course out of lakhs of aspirants. Because in India, being a doctor is the most respectful profession, and earning potential is enormous as well. So, students and their parents want only one thing – admission in a medical college.
But, as mentioned above, admission in a private medical college would cost you an arm and a leg, and your kidneys as well! You won’t be able to find any decent private medical college which is offering you admission in MBBS course in less than 70 lakhs total cost – many colleges would cost you almost a crore for 6 years of MBBS course. Here China comes in the picture with their quality medical education. In China, one can complete 6 years of medical degree course which is equivalent of MBBS in India, for as low as 20 lakhs total (without living expense in China of course). If this is not enough reason for you, we have more –
Easy Admission Procedure
In India, it’s almost impossible for an average student to get admission in a government medical school due to severe competition. But in China, it’s easy to get enrolled for a medical degree at a reputable university. No admission test is required, only 70% in PCBE in 12th and qualification mark in NEET are enough to get you admitted to the university of your choice.
If you compare the admission criteria of medical schools in countries like India, USA, UK, Australia, etc., you’ll find it’s a lot easier to get the entry in a Chinese medical school. Hence, opting for MBBS in China will help you avoid the queue of lakhs of students who are appearing in the NEET along with you.
Low Criteria Requirement
Chinese medical schools might not have very strict entrance requirement, but that does not translate to a lack of quality education. Medical universities, which are approved by the Chinese government, listed under the WHO directory, and recognized by the MCI, offer a high-quality medical course of global standard. Their curriculum is almost similar compared with the top-notch Indian medical courses.
English-Medium Teaching System
For International students, this is the most crucial factor. Chinese universities understand this very well. Therefore, the teachers who teach international students, are well qualified in English and very much able to teach and communicate eloquently with students in English. The universities even employ foreign teachers from English-speaking countries frequently. So, if you’re afraid of going to China assuming that you have to learn Mandarin to get admission, nothing can be far from the truth.
Creative Teaching Methodology
Medical science is getting advanced every moment. All the countries are investing heavily in medical research and studies. China is no different. China is one of the few countries which is investing a significant share of annual GDP in health and medicine. Billions of dollars are being funded by the Chinese government and corporates in China every year. And to keep pace with this fast advancement, Chinese medical universities are also changing and developing new and creative medical education system. MBBS students at Chinese universities are regularly getting exposed to the latest inventions in medicine, most recent research data and most advanced medical device and equipment.
Economical Living Cost
Apart from the fact that studying medicine in China is almost 70% cheaper compared with studying MBBS in any private medical school in India, the overall cost of living is surprisingly affordable for an international student. Everything from hostel or apartment rent to cost of groceries are on par with any big city of India, sometimes even cheaper depending on where you live in China. Of course, cities like Beijing or Shanghai would be costlier, but medical schools are mostly situated in a place where things are affordable for international students.

Precautions for Indian Students while Pursuing MBBS in China :
-
Choose only A-Grade universities
No matter how tempting it feels, one should never select a medical university based on the course fee only. The education department of China graded the universities based on their education quality. Hence the lower grade universities charge small fees to attract international students. You might wonder that the degrees universities are offering are all the same. Yes, it’s true, but to only some extent. Just like a BA degree from Patna University can never carry the same weight as a BA degree from JNU, the same analogy can be applied when choosing the medical university in China. It’s not only the degree, but it’s also more about education quality, faculty quality, number of total English-speaking faculties, number of foreign faculties, number of international students, a student exchange program with prestigious foreign universities, research opportunity, patient exposure, and so on.
-
Never choose a bilingual course
You should also beware from educational consultants who promise to get you admitted in English courses for a low fee. Don’t fall for that trap. There are 3 types of MBBS courses in China – Chinese, Bilingual and English. As a non-Chinese student, obviously, you can’t join a Chinese-medium medical course. You can join in either Bilingual or in a full English-medium course. As the name suggests, a full English-medium course would be ideal for you, because all the course materials will be in English, and communication with teachers will be in English too.
Chinese universities often employ faculties from English-speaking countries only to cater to international students who joined in a full English-medium course. However, the “Bilingual” course is being taught in English partially and rest in Chinese. The teachers of bilingual course also are not very proficient in English, so it will be hard for you to communicate with your teachers if you get admission in a bilingual MBBS course. But the fee of a bilingual course is lower than the full English-medium course. Hence, some dishonest consultants suggest such bilingual courses to the students promising low fee.
