KOLKATA: About 400 aspiring doctors from across Bengal are desperately looking for ways to salvage their careers, A month after returning home from war-torn Ukraine. With uncertainty looming over the remainder of their course in Ukraine or in India, many of them are considering other career options even though their Ukrainian universities have resumed online classes. Some have already enrolled in other courses, some are looking for part-time jobs while some first-year students are preparing to sit again for NEET.
CM Mamata Banerjee said earlier this week she has written to the PM seeking necessary approvals to allow willing students to complete their remaining studies and internships in state-run or private colleges in Bengal but is yet to get a reply. Trinamool Congress MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay also raised the issue in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
A first-year medical student told TOI she has already joined a nursing course but is too embarrassed to tell her classmates or teachers about her recent past in Ukraine.
“I always wanted to become a doctor and appeared for NEET as well as the nursing entrance exam. When I couldn’t bag a medical seat in the state, I moved to Ukraine. Later I learnt that I had been selected for nursing. But I was happy to chase my dream in Ukraine. When the war shattered my hopes and I was back in my village, I chose not to sit back and wait for the situation to change and joined the nursing course for which I was still eligible. But all I want is to become a doctor and save lives,” she said, requesting that her name not be published.
